“What do you mean there isn’t anything they can do?”

The question, uttered by the Gaudet matriarch later that evening, cut through the good-natured conversation going on around the big table. All eyes turned their way, making Devon want to sink into the floor, but Deuce didn’t seem to notice. She supposed he had enough to worry about with the ferocious frown on his mother’s face.

Instead, she looked over to see if Edward had heard Marla’s sharp question. But no, the kids were still talking and laughing at their table only a few feet away, although the older boys seemed to sense the tension gripping the adults. Yet they didn’t come over, didn’t shush the younger kids. If anything, they seemed to engage the kids to keep them distracted.

“They can’t do anything but record the complaint,” Deuce explained in a low tone, drawing Devon’s attention once again.

He gave her a tight smile of apology. He hadn’t wanted to come to dinner with the entire family. Again. Since she’d had to make the calls to her family, it seemed only fair to Devon that he have to do the same with his family.

“The threats against her have taken place in another parish, which is outside their jurisdiction. Because Devon didn’t report it to her local department out of fear it would get out, they’re going to contact some people with the sheriff’s department, but until the wheels of justice start moving, or more concrete evidence comes to light, there isn’t much they can do.” He leaned back in his chair and combed his hair off of his forehead, tension radiating off of him like heat. “Devon’s already spoken to her family, giving them the number of a prepaid phone we picked up earlier today, but I don’t feel like it’ll be enough.” He shook his head. “I have someone tracing the number that called her old phone but we’re not likely to get anything, because if her stalker is smart, they’ll use a prepaid phone.”

No one said anything for a while.

“Well that sucks,” Hennessey muttered under her breath. Devon looked over at the redhead, whose freckled face blushed when she realized everyone heard. Then she lifted her chin. “Well, it does. She’s having to change her whole life around just because of this person and the police can’t even help her unless she’s being physically attacked. What kind of crap is that?”

“Nessie,” Lea said softly.

“No, Mom,” the teenager teetering on adulthood countered. “This is exactly why I want to go into Sociology. I want to help women like Devon who’re being targeted because they fall through the cracks in the system.” Nessie shot her an apologetic glance that so closely resembled Deuce’s, she almost laughed. Almost, because while it was cute, the young woman was passionate about what she was saying and deserved to have her chance to say it. “One-third of women worldwide have been victims of physical abuse or violence. Did you know that? A third of women worldwide! And about thirty-eight percent of women are killed by their partners.
